The Power of the Classroom (dipnote)
In certain parts of the world, how many things have to go right in order to get a girl into a classroom?
And what type of life can that education can provide her?
As the senior gender coordinator for USAID, these questions fill my mind constantly as I seek to carry out my mandate — helping empower women and girls to participate fully and benefit from the development of their societies.
Earlier this summer, I traveled with Dr. Jill Biden, USAID administrator Raj Shah, and Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Cathy Russellto Zambia, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where I was able to see these questions answered firsthand.
The decision to allow a child to go to school is fraught with obstacles. Some are material: uniforms, socks, shoes, notebooks and pencils. Some reflect the economic and cultural realities of poverty-stricken families. But these concerns also often pale in comparison to the serious danger that many women and girls face every single time they step out of their homes to pursue an education.
In the eastern part of the DRC, I met a young woman who was kidnapped from her own home and taken into …

Do We Really Need a Federal Robotics Commission? (Reason Magazine – Hit and Run)
University of Washington law professor Ryan Calo offers over at the Brookings Institution the modest proposal that the Feds create a Robotics Commission to oversee developments in that field.
Calo cites current confusion among various agencies about how to respond to the development of drones, driverless cars, and algorithmic stock trading as evidence that the government needs a robotics commission to serve as a central repository for expertise on robotics. Calo rejects the notion that the new commision should be some kind of enforcement agency like the Federal Trade Commission, the Securities and Exchange Commission, or the Food and Drug Administration. However, bureaucratic precedents suggest that Calo's good intentions regarding such advisory agencies are likely to be subverted as the commissioners over time seek to expand their budgets and power.
Ultimately, I fear that a Federal Robotics Commission would do for robots and artificial intelligence what the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has done for nuclear power.

The Future of Surgery: Less Cutting, More Robots – The Atlantic
The AtlanticThe Future of Surgery: Less Cutting, More RobotsThe AtlanticThe inside of the human body is dark and closed off—for the most part—from the world around it. This is usually an advantage. But when something goes wrong and surgeons believe they can fix it, they need to open up the body's barriers and see inside.

Anki Drive's robotic race cars will play nice with Android starting in October (Engadget)
Ever since Anki Drive — a toy car racing system powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning — made a big splash at Apple's WWDC 2013 keynote, it's been iOS-only. That ends next month, however, as Anki Drive is finally coming to Android for the first time. Sean Levatino, Anki's lead designer, tells us that one of the company's big core commitments is accessibility, and Android compatibility is a big part of that. "We want to support as many platforms as possible," he says. Anki's goal, after all, is to bring robotics to the masses.

Tesco wants robots and wearables to help shape the supermarket of the future (wireless.engadget)
For Britain's supermarket chains, it's no longer just a case of selling food, it's about how you can do it _better_. Tesco has long thought about how technology can give it an edge over its rivals, but it's now experimenting with robotics, wearables and cognitive computing in an attempt to secure future success. That's according to Mike McNamara, Tesco's chief information officer, who revealed that the company has become the latest in a long line of retailers to leverage IBM's Watson supercomputer to explore new ideas using old data. Tesco's Labs division, the team behind its Google Glass app and other tech trials, fed Watson "thousands" of recipes and ingredients and asked it to come up with some unique meal ideas. The supermarket is already trialling smartwatches in a bid to better manage stock, but it looks increasingly likely that machines will take over such jobs in the future. McNamara believes robots that can gauge depth and height could free up time for stockroom associates, but that also brings another danger — the risk that they'd replace workers completely.
